The City Mall to showcase history of Lagos, artefacts

The City Mall is a project between the firm the commission which will be completed in October this year. It has spaces for 50 shopping facility and contain a built up area of about 7,500 square metres with 4,216 square metres of floor space.

Artefacts and photographs showing history of Lagos, which dates back to five centuries, will be on display from October in the new museum complex under construction in central Lagos.

The new complex is the brainchild of Stephenol Holdings Nigeria Limited, which has entered an agreement with National Commission on Museums and Monuments to resurrect its abandoned multipurpose complex, christened 'The City Mall'. The firm plan to invest over N500 million on the structures under a Build, Operate and Transfer scheme. It is located opposite the MUSON Centre and adjacent to the Tafawa Belawa Square Complex.

Mr. Simeon Oladokun, a director of the firm explained that their intention is to preserve the history of Lagos and bring back the lost memories for the people. He added that discussions are on going with a group of international cultural preservers to give away some of their priced photographs, sculptors, metal and wood carvings about Nigeria.

According to the firm, the commission will also be moving museum materials for display and selling at some part of the mall. "We have an area of commercial activity to make it viable, and an area for preserving the culture of Nigeria heritage for local and international visitors."

Mr. Oladokun further said that the building is designed so that the façade and atrium will be a monument marching a background history of Lagos, in other to enhance the culture of Nigeria." Many people don't know what it was then when the colonials were here, such as how the old Marina and Bar Beach looked. This place will retell the stories about Nigerian heritage." He added.
