KDE Puts Sun In The Shadow On Linux Desktop

KDE 3.2 won the Industry Award for the Best Linux Desktop Environment at the LinuxUser & Developer Expo 2004 held in London this week leaving behind it the commercial desktop offerings from Sun and Ximian.

(PRWEB) April 23, 2004 --KDE 3.2 won the Industry Award for the Best Linux Desktop Environment at the LinuxUser & Developer Expo 2004 held in London this week leaving behind it the commercial desktop offerings from Sun and Ximian. Earlier this year in New York, KDE already received the LinuxWorld Magazine 2003 Readers' Choice Award for Best Linux Desktop Manager.

The award was handed over to KDE developer Richard Moore. "It was a great pleasure to receive this award on behalf of all the KDE teams. Being voted best desktop by judges from the Linux computing industry shows that KDE is providing a solid, widely accepted enterprise level desktop.", Moore commented.

Jury member Jono Bacon explained the decision for KDE, "KDE is a powerful contemporary desktop interface and it deserves this award due to the dedication and innovation that it has shown over the last year. I look forward to seeing how KDE reacts to the new challenges in the Linux community."

KDE 3.2 has been released in february of this year, and delivers throughout all of KDE many improvements such as better usability, inline spell-checking, an electronic wallet for storing passwords, easier to use lock down features and improved accessibility. In addition, more than 2000 improvements suggested by KDE's large userbase have been implemented and more than 10000 problem reports have been resolved for the new version. The new version is also noticably faster than its predecessors.

This week a maintenance version (KDE 3.2.2) has been released which contains additional fixes and translations. New translations include Bengali, Icelandic, Japanese, Lithuanian, Low Saxon, Latin Serbian and Tajik.

KDE 3.2 is commercially available as part of SUSE LINUX 9.1 and Mandrakelinux 10.0 among others.
