Delft, The Netherlands (PRWEB) February 14, 2006 -- TNO today announced the launch of Farcast, a next generation content repurposing platform. The Farcast platform is designed to support applications which let users manage and share multimedia content whenever and wherever, regardless of the format, network or device used. Real-time multimedia reporting, newsfeeds to the web or to mobile, and podcasting from the mobile are among the new applications which have been developed and tested using Farcast.

Seamless integration
The Farcast platform transcodes, stores, manages and distributes content in all popular web and mobile formats. It incorporates subscription (content owner and consumer), secure content management (including scheduling), transcoding and delivery (push and pull) functionality. The carrier grade platform can be used as an integrated or remotely hosted solution. Farcast can also be seamlessly integrated into IMS or SIP-based architectures, generating a new breed of rich media applications which encourage the creation and sharing of multimedia content.

Rich media applications
Applications developed to date include Farcast Reporter, Farcast NewsFacts and Farcast Podcaster: Farcast Reporter enables journalists to publish news text, images, audio and video files via their mobile along with GPS-based location tags. Farcast NewsFacts distributes regular bulletins with the latest news in text, images, audio and video files to subscriber mobiles. Customised versions of both Farcast Reporter and Farcast NewsFacts have been developed for Netherlands national news agency ANP. In addition, Farcast enables podcasting via mobile: Farcast Podcaster allows podcasters to create and edit material on the mobile, and uses the Farcast platform to transcode, collate and publish the podcasts immediately on the Internet.

“TNO has a wealth of experience in the mobile world, and Farcast has been developed to accelerate innovation in the mobile market,” said Gerard van Oortmerssen, Managing Director of TNO Information and Communication Technology. “With Farcast we enable service providers to develop applications to stimulate an early market entry in combination with comprehensive user feedback and experience.”

Demonstrations of Farcast-based applications will be running throughout 3GSM at Hall 1, Stand C69 at 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona.
