Charitable Giving Expert Lisa M. Dietlin Spotlights National Philanthropy Day as a Time to Encourage Creative Giving during the Upcoming Holiday Season. Dietlin suggests five ways individuals can help nonprofit organizations in this down economy.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) November 13, 2008 -- Charitable giving expert and philanthropic consultant Lisa M. Dietlin is calling on all Americans to use National Philanthropy Day®, November 15th, to launch a new commitment to the spirit of giving during the upcoming holiday season -- a commitment that in this tough economic time can go beyond monetary donations.

"Americans are committed to helping people in need and supporting causes in our communities; last year we gave more than $300 billion to 1.5 million charitable organizations in this country -- charitable giving is powerful, it connects people and improves the quality of life of everyone it touches," said Lisa M. Dietlin, President and CEO of Lisa M. Dietlin & Associates. "While the current economic crisis may affect charitable donations this year, there are many ways for people to help nonprofit organizations continue providing important services to individuals in need. The economy may be struggling, but the spirit of giving is strong."

The North Texas Food Bank, a nationally acclaimed nonprofit hunger relief organization that distributes food through a network of feeding programs in 13 North Texas counties, reports it's receiving a steady response from the community despite the changes in the economy. "Providing food to the hungry is a basic human service and we are pleased to know our community is answering the call for help; each month, our agency pantries distribute food to more than 50,000 families," said Jan Pruitt, President and CEO of the North Texas Food Bank. "We encourage cash donations especially during the holiday season: for every dollar donated, the NTFB is able to provide five meals; 97 cents of every donated dollar is used to feed hungry North Texas families."

Lisa M. Dietlin's Five Ways to Help Nonprofit Organizations in this Down Economy:

Every Penny Counts
Small donations matter -- giving up a $3 coffee per day equals more than $1,000 a year in savings. Consider giving all or half of this savings to a cause that matters to you. Nonprofit organizations are efficient at stretching a dollar to its maximum.

Try to Think Practically
If you buy a book of stamps -- buy a second set and give it to a community service organization. Go through your old books and give them to your local library. If kids have outgrown their winter coats, donate them to a thrift store or a house of worship, so others can be warm this winter.

Volunteer Your Talents
If you have time, or if you're out of work, consider volunteering with a nonprofit organization. Your talents can fulfill a need within the organization while you continue to grow your skill set and build your professional network.

Make an in-kind Donation
Need to clear clutter? Items such as office equipment, furniture, sports equipment and small kitchen appliances are of great value to nonprofit organizations.

Fulfill Commitments
Fulfill the pledge you made to a nonprofit; it is counting on your promise. If necessary, contact the organization to expand the timeline to meet your financial commitment.
