Silver Spring, MD (Vocus/PRWEB ) January 21, 2009 -– Congress should establish a $25 to $50 billion Federal Broadband Investment Fund to expand the deployment of next generation broadband infrastructure in unserved and underserved areas throughout the country and increase subscription to services supported by broadband, announced the National Association of State Utility Consumer Advocates (NASUCA). The fund would provide grants to individual states according to demonstrated need.

In letters sent to congressional leaders and the new administration’s transition team, NASUCA laid out its recommendations for the fund, including a minimum three year disbursement period and an encouragement of states to provide matching funds.

“Our recommendations to Congress would provide the stimulus needed to narrow the broadband divide,” said David Springe, Consumer Counsel for the State of Kansas and President of NASUCA. “By providing states with much-needed resources, Congress can help put the latest technology to use for the benefit of consumers in unserved and underserved areas and strengthen the economic foundation of our country.”

The letter to the new administration’s transition team is attached. This letter and the letters sent to Congress are available at www.nasuca.org.
