A Solution to the Problem of Global Warming

Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) March 30, 2009 -- Global warming is blamed for increasingly destructive storms and droughts. A new invention, purported to provide an end-to-end solution to global warming, is described in Dolphin Blue's Straight Talk on Sustainability Forum: A Solution to the Problem of Global Warming by Thomas Manaugh, PhD.

As a first step, multiple alternative "green" energy sources are massively employed on an "Energy Island" to produce electricity and hydrogen gas to serve as alternatives to carbon-based fuels. The sources of energy include wind, solar, ocean currents, waves, and differences in salinity and temperature between layers of ocean water. Numerous Energy Islands could be constructed and deployed around the globe.

The first step continues and is augmented by a second step: a unique use of lasers is employed to cool the planet. Thousands of high-powered lasers, operating 24 hours per day, rid the Earth of excess energy by radiating it into Space. Those lasers are powered by the same energy sources that are tapped to produce electricity and hydrogen. If not tapped and not transmitted, those energy sources (e.g., the kinetic energy of waves and wind) eventually become transformed into excess heat -- global warming.

During the Cold War of the 20th century, tens of thousands of nuclear weapons were constructed and maintained in response to an existential threat that was perceived by western and communist countries. The history of nuclear weapons gives evidence that it would be within the capacity of all the nations, working together, to construct and operate tens of thousands (even hundreds of thousands) of laser devices to cool the planet. Given that global warming is the great existential threat of the 21st century, we have reason to believe that all nations could combine resources and work together to stop the use of carbon-based fuels and to cool the planet.

The proposed solution could only have an impact on global warming if it were realized in a public works project funded at an unprecedented level. Short of a total cessation of the burning of fossil fuels for energy and without the collaboration and resultant funding of a project of such magnitude as described here, we will potentially expend far more (trillions of dollars) in costs incurred by the continuing warming of our planet.

Could the people of planet Earth come together to initiate and carry out the biggest project ever conceived? Yes, they could. Yes, they must. More detail is available at Dolphin Blue's Straight Talk on Sustainability Forum: A Solution to the Problem of Global Warming .
