Photovoice Exhibit on Display May 4 - 8 MA State House, Doric Hall

Wayside Youth and Family Support Network is featuring the work of young adults who are living with mental health issues. "A Walk In Our Shoes" by South Shore Mental Health, provides the perspective of parents whose adolescent and young adult children struggle with mental health challenges.

Quincy, MA (PRWEB) April 16, 2009 -- Senator Karen Spilka; Chair Joint Committee on Children and Families, Wayside Youth & Family Support Network and South Shore Mental Health invite you to a reception to honor the photography and stories created by Photovoice groups. Photovoice is a unique blend of advocacy, self-discovery, and photojournalism. It invites groups of people who are rarely heard from to use cameras and accompanying narratives to record their lives and use this creative outlet to promote positive change in their lives and communities.

Wayside Youth and Family Support Network is featuring the work of young adults who are living with mental health issues. "A Walk In Our Shoes" by South Shore Mental Health provides the perspective of parents whose adolescent and young adult children struggle with mental health challenges.

All participants have chosen to display their work with the hope of informing you about what their struggles and triumphs are like through their own eyes and to show what you as an individual, group or organization can do to support them and help bring about change.

This Photovoice exhibit will be on display from May 4 through May 8 at the State House's Doric Hall. There will be a reception on May 6 from 1:00 until 3:00pm. Opening remarks from Senator Karen Spilka, with guest speaker Barbara Leadholm; Commissioner, The Department of Mental Health. Also speaking will be Michelle Butman, LCSW; Coordinator Transition Resources And Community Supports; South Shore Mental Health, Yolanda Ortiz, MSW; Transitional Age Youth Supporter, Wayside Youth & Family Support and Young Adult and Parent Photovoice participants will take place in Nurses Hall at 1:30 - 2:15pm.

Musical selections will be from Tunefoolery Concert Ensemble of Cambridge. They consist of over 50 musicians with psychiatric disabilities who play and perform music as a way towards healing and recovery.
