Minuteman Career & Technical High School's Energy Conservation Plan

Lexington, MA (PRWEB) May 2, 2009 -- Siemens Building Technologies, a leading provider of energy services and building automation systems, is at the forefront of the energy conservation plan that Minuteman High School will be implementing this year. The performance-based project will upgrade and retrofit a number of the school's energy-using building systems with cutting-edge technology and implement a series of energy efficiency strategies that will trim Minuteman's energy use as much as 50% and generate equivalent savings on the school's energy bill. Siemens Building Technologies, based in Canton, Massachusetts,. will oversee all aspects of the project and more than $5 million in improvements Minuteman High School has planned. Siemens Energy Solutions Account Executive Roland Butzke, believes Minuteman's energy efficiency plans will demonstrate its commitment to energy efficiency and greener operations, "Minuteman has an unprecedented opportunity to achieve dramatic energy savings in a project financed by the cost reductions the savings achieve. Not only will this help the school be greener and manage energy costs over the long run, it will also improve the learning and teaching environment for everyone in the school."

Juniors in the Environmental Technology Program at Minuteman were able to participate in the energy-audit process, and were treated to three interactive sessions led by Siemens' Hannes Klein: "Introduction to Energy Engineering," "The Energy Audit," and "Measurement Recommendations, Alternative Energy Systems." Students presented the findings of their own energy audit work which involved gathering energy use data and other statistics from the systems in use throughout the school. "Working with Siemens was fun as well as challenging; it helped us to understand what working in the energy field was really like", said Liz Piantedosi of Stow, who incidentally, won a silver medal at the Massachusetts Skills USA competition last May for calculating Minuteman's "carbon footprint". Martin Barry of Arlington added, "It was an awesome experience that has inspired me to look at engineering as my college major".

Interestingly enough, Minuteman was ahead of the times as well as ahead of themselves. When the school was built they had solar water-heating panels installed on the roof and the architect's design included tunnels that run under the school to aid thermal conversion and heating and cooling air recovery. However, neither the tunnels nor the solar panels were ever put into service. With Siemens supervision and know-how, these aspects of the school's original design will finally be put to good use and help trim the energy needed to heat air in the winter or cool it in the summer.
