SunHawk Adolescent Recovery Center Changes Name to Reflect Focus on Teen Substance Abuse Recovery

One of the few long-term treatment centers for youth struggling with substance abuse issues, SunHawk Adolescent Recovery Center, has changed its name to reflect its emphasis on teen substance abuse treatment.

St. George, UT (PRWEB) October 31, 2009 -- SunHawk Adolescent Recovery Center, formerly SunHawk Academy, has changed its name to reflect the program's focus on treating adolescent substance abuse.

Licensed as an Adolescent Substance Abuse Residential Treatment Center for teens ages 13-17, SunHawk Adolescent Recovery Center is one of the few comprehensive substance abuse recovery programs for teens in the U.S.

"SunHawk has been specializing in substance abuse treatment for teens for some time now," says Ben Harris, Executive Director of the program. "Changing our name is merely a formality to better define what our focus has long been and what referring professionals have come to understand and appreciate about SunHawk."

The foundation of SunHawk's teen substance abuse treatment program is the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. Adolescents are introduced to all 12 Steps, with an intensive focus on Steps One through Five, and attend daily AA meetings in the local community as well as on site. Whether the teens are engaged in schoolwork, recreational activities, therapy or community service, they are learning how the 12 Steps integrate into every facet of life.

"The 12 Step principles of honesty, personal accountability, reliance on a higher power and service to others are the backbone of our program," says Harris.

One element of the 12 Steps that many teens find particularly rewarding is the idea of turning their lives over to a higher power. At SunHawk, the concept of spirituality is made concrete by community service projects and an emphasis on giving back.

In addition to the 12 Steps, teens at SunHawk participate in individual and group therapy provided by a team of clinical professionals, accredited academics and family development workshops. Because adolescents are highly motivated and influenced by their peers, the teens participate in more than 30 hours of group work per week. During these sessions, teens identify the underlying causes of their substance abuse and share their feelings with peers who understand the ups and downs of recovery.

The staff at SunHawk receives extensive training in the field of adolescent addiction, and many have both professional and personal experience in recovery. Working closely with the adolescents on a long-term basis, the staff members become trusted authorities as well as positive role models for the teens.

In order to ensure long-term success, the lessons teens learn at SunHawk are reinforced on an ongoing basis. Relapse prevention planning begins at the time of enrollment and continues with an aftercare program. Teens are encouraged to rely on their "sober support system" at home, made up of family and other resources, in order to identify and manage triggers for drug or alcohol use. A family program, which includes family counseling, parent workshops and substance abuse education, helps to ensure that the family can offer support and guidance throughout the recovery process.

"SunHawk Adolescent Recovery Center is a unique, cost-effective option for parents and professionals," says Harris. "By combining the intensive substance abuse treatment and education, 12 Step philosophies and holistic activities of a traditional rehabilitation program with the recovery time necessary for successful internalization of skills and lifelong sobriety, we are providing families with the best value."

SunHawk Adolescent Recovery Center is one of the few long-term treatment centers for youth struggling with substance abuse issues.
