Tamils, Sustained by Events, Urge Others to Join Non-Stop DC Rally on November 20

November 20th marks three timetables. It marks six months since the Sri Lankan government said its detention centers would be empty. (Surprise! They are not.) It is when the "Break the Silence" marchers who walked from Chicago to Washington D.C. will join the DC Non-Stop Rally for a day of speeches and demonstrations in front of the White House. It is also (almost) the 200th day of the non-stop rally.

(PRWEB) November 2, 2009 -- The energetic Tamils who have been demonstrating in Lafayette Park since last May 11 are marking November 20th as a special day.

November 20th is special for three reasons. It marks six months since the Sri Lankan government said its detention centers would be empty. (Surprise! They are not.) It is when the “Break the Silence” marchers who walked from Chicago to Washington D.C. will join the DC Non-Stop Rally for speeches and demonstrations in front of the White House. It is also (almost) the 200th day of the non-stop rally.

Six months ago the Sri Lankan government promised that the detention camps where almost 300,000 Tamils are held prisoner would be empty by now. To nobody’s surprise, the camps still have hundreds of thousands of Tamils still in them. The date and the fact that the promise has not been kept are both worth observing, say the Tamil organizers.

The “Break the Silence” marchers left Chicago in May and will finish their long walk in Lafayette Park on November 20th. TV stations and newspapers interviewed them and told their story along the way. Walking about 30 miles per day, the healthy marchers said that they hoped the attention they got would help bring a change for Tamils in Sri Lanka. They also hope to attract more Tamils to the rally.

The organizers of the rally say they plan to keep the rally going until some significant change is made for Tamils in Sri Lanka. That might be a long time, so they are observing landmarks like the 200th day of rallying in front of the White House.

The rally’s organizers also say they hope to attract more North American Tamils to Lafayette Park. Some suggest bringing your family to Washington for a short vacation and spending at least one day of it in Lafayette Park demonstrating to help the Tamils.
