Poll: Tamils Embrace Idea of a Transnational Government

In response to a Tamils for Obama poll titled "What next for Tamils?" thousands of Tamils world-wide endorsed the idea of a transnational government representing the interest of Tamils everywhere.

New York, NY (PRWEB) November 5, 2009 -- In response to a Tamils for Obama poll titled "What next for Tamils?" thousands of Tamils world-wide endorsed (by 94%) the idea of a transnational government representing the interest of Tamils everywhere.

Besides endorsing the idea of a transnational government, the Tamils answering the poll preferred the term "transnational government (82%)" to "government in exile (18%)". They also wanted a stateless transnational government (by 95%), but if there were to be a host country the Tamils' favorite choice was Norway (by 25%), followed by the U.K., the U.S.A, Canada, Switzerland, and sixty other countries.

The Tamils also favored bringing war crimes charges against Sri Lankan government officials in international courts (99%). The Tamil respondents also believed that the international community could change the behavior of the GOSL toward Tamils (95%), a response that surprised many at Tamils for Obama.

To the poll's last question, "What should be the Tamils ultimate goal?", the answer was no surprise. The Tamils overwhelmingly want an independent Tamil state (90%), with much smaller percentages wishing for a confederation (9%), some local control and ethnic recognition within a unified state (1%), or continuing with the present government (0.2%).

The poll was conducted by internet from October 14, 2009 to November 04, 2009. Respondents from 66 counties answered the poll, with 10154 people participating.

Tamils are an ethnic group living mainly in the northeast of Sri Lanka and southern India. During the final weeks of the recent civil war, the Sri Lankan government killed about 1,000 Tamil civilians per day, according to the United Nations, and about 30,000 in 2009. Tamils are a minority population in Sri Lanka, and have borne the brunt of a civil war they regard as genocide. One-third of the Tamil population has fled the island and formed a substantial diaspora overseas. Tamils for Obama is comprised of Tamils who have settled in the U.S. or who were born in the U.S.
