Santa Barbara, CA (PRWEB) November 4, 2009 -- Today Greenopia released an environmental analysis of 10 of the top baby food manufacturers. The top brand, receiving 4 out of a possible 4 leafs, was Tastybaby.

Major brands such as Gerber, EnFamil, and Pediasure did not fare as well in the study, although some have improved their supply chain over the past few years and have pledged continued action.

With the baby food industry being the source of constant product recalls, the safety of the food itself is the primary concern. But some companies have also been addressing their environmental footprint while making some of the safest products on the market.

"Being a mother of three, I understand how hard it is, when you are in a hurry, to make the best choice for your children," says Gay Browne, Founder of Greenopia. "Hopefully this information will be helpful for parents everywhere and make their life a little bit easier."

Greenopia used a comprehensive set of criteria to determine the baby food company ratings. Data was collected from the companies themselves pertaining to the ingredient sourcing, transparency, transportation methods, attributes of the product's packaging, and company logistics. Weights were set based off the relative life cycle impacts of each criterion during baby food production.

"It's especially important that the ingredients found in baby food are sourced in a safe and responsible manner," said Doug Mazeffa, Greenopia's Research Director. "Babies and small children are more susceptible to many of the hazards found in our environment, so it is crucial that baby food companies take special care."
