Staten Island Academy is hosting a panel discussion about college admissions along with a screening of In 500 Words or Less, a documentary film about four students going through the admissions process.
Staten Island, NY (Vocus/PRWEB ) November 4, 2009 -- Staten Island Academy is hosting a panel discussion about college admissions along with a screening of In 500 Words or Less, a documentary film about four students going through the admissions process. The event is open to the public free of charge and will take place on the Staten Island Academy campus on November 12 at 7:00 PM.
The panel discussion will take place after the film screening and will be lead by the Academy’s Director of College Guidance, Michael Acquilano. The other members of the panel include Kristina Muller, Director of Admissions at Wagner College and Dr. Patricia Peek, Director of Lincoln Center Enrollment Group at Fordham University.
Mr. Acquilano is a member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling and the New York State Association for College Admission Counseling. Mr. Acquilano recently completed a term as President of the New York State Association for College Admission Counseling where he also held the positions of Chief Delegate and Government Relations Co-Chair. He has presented on college counseling and admissions at numerous state and national conferences.
The documentary film, In 500 Words of Less, emerges this fall just as families everywhere are finding themselves in the throes of the stressful and often puzzling college application process. It’s a rite of passage for many American teens, but the process overwhelms even the most confident and relaxed: college fairs, tours, SATs, applications, and endless amounts of forms. Then there’s the personal essay. How does a seventeen-year-old define herself to total strangers in a 500-word essay when she’s only beginning to discover who she really is? And how can she balance her own ambition and discovery with her parents’ expectations?
Those complications are what I wanted to explore, explains Molly Fowler, one of the film’s two directors. I decided to make this film for my daughters... I worry every day that my expectations and ambition for them might cloud their ability to figure out who they are, and to choose the right fit for themselves.
Parents and teens alike will recognize the aspirations, anxieties, disappointments and triumphs in the 500 Words characters’ lives. Whether viewers are about to embark on the process or have recently survived it, they’ll ride along side Molly on her emotional roller coaster as she tries to balance her parents’ expectations with her own goals. They’ll respect Leo as he works to fulfill his mother’s American dream while trying to maintain ties to his Dominican heritage. They’ll root for Lindsay as she searches for her next home while the one she's known for 17 years gets turned upside down; and they’ll cheer for Michael as he steps out from behind his sister's Ivy League shadow to discover his own priorities.
Staten Island Academy students meet and far exceed New York State requirements for high school graduation and may take up to six advanced placement (AP) classes during Grades 11-12. AP classes allow students to earn credits toward their college degree from right here at the Academy. In addition, students now have the opportunity to take Princeton Review SAT Prep classes on campus as they prepare for examinations.
