USSOCOM – Stand Off Precision Guided Munition Quick Reaction Team to Receive 13th Annual William J. Perry Award from Precision Strike Association

The Precision Strike Association (PSA), dedicated to advancing the art and science of precision engagement concepts and technologies, announces the selection of the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) Stand Off Precision Guided Munition (SOPGM) Quick Reaction Team to receive the 2009 William J. Perry Award, to be presented at the Precision Strike Annual Review conference on March 10th-11th in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida.

Arlington, VA (Vocus/PRWEB ) February 24, 2009 -- The Precision Strike Association (PSA), dedicated to advancing the art and science of precision engagement concepts and technologies, has announced the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) Stand Off Precision Guided Munition (SOPGM) Quick Reaction Team is to receive the 2009 William J. Perry Award. The award will be presented at the Precision Strike Annual Review conference on March 10th-11th in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida.

Celebrating its thirteenth year, the William J. Perry Precision Strike Award is presented annually for outstanding leadership or technical achievements resulting in significant contribution to precision strike systems. Past recipients include: 1997—Dr. William J. Perry; 1998—Former Vice President Dan Quayle; 1999—RADM (Ret) Walter Locke, USN; 2000—The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory; 2001—NAVSTAR Global Positioning System Joint Program Office; 2002—Representative Jim Hansen; 2003—Terry R. Little; 2004—JDAM Program Team: U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy & The Boeing Company; 2005—United States Warriors of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom; 2006—The Tactical Tomahawk Team: U.S. Navy and Raytheon Company; 2007—The Small Diameter Bomb Team: U.S. Air Force and The Boeing Company; 2008—Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System: U.S. Army and Lockheed Martin Corp.

The Stand Off Precision Guided Munitions Quick Reaction Team filled an emerging 2007 Commander, USSOCOM Combat Mission Need Statement requirement for small, but effective kill mechanisms coupled with persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance assets employed in the Global War on Terror. They applied current technology to a critical battlefield need, fielding the first-of-a-kind SOF airborne weapon in under 11 months. The SOPGM team coupled ingenuity and unconventional thinking to an existing US Army inventory Cold War-era munition, filling an urgent Combatant Commander requirement. Applying a consistently joint perspective through a collection of superb acquisition professionals from the Department of Defense and Industry, the SOPGM Quick Reaction Capability team shortened the acquisition lead-time from years to months. As a result, the capability is now in the hands of deployed forces around the globe.

"The SOPGM team demonstrated that with innovation and focus needed capability can be rapidly put into the hands of the warfighter."

The award will be presented at a special luncheon at the Emerald Coast Conference Center in Ft. Walton Beach on 10 March during the Precision Strike Annual Review (PSAR-09) (http://www.precisionstrike.org/ap_review.htm). The Precision Strike Annual Review runs from 10-11 March, 2009 and will focus on industry perspectives regarding future directions for precision strike technologies and the new administration's objectives.
