Peruvian Regulators Reduce Doe Run Peru Fine Osingermin Confirms La Oroya PamaProjects on Schedule
Doe Run Peru has been notified that Peruvian regulators have reduced by almost half a fine levied on the company for allegedly surpassing emissions limits at its La Oroya metals processing facility.
Lima, Peru (PRWEB) November 10, 2008 -- Doe Run Peru has been notified that Peruvian regulators have reduced by almost half a fine levied on the company for allegedly surpassing emissions limits at its La Oroya metals processing facility.
"The Board of Directors of Osingermin (an independent regulatory agency) has confirmed that Doe Run Peru has complied with the obligations set forth in the environmental operating agreement with the government (PAMA)," Jose Mogrovejo, Doe Run Peru's Vice President for Environmental Affairs, said of Osingermin's response to the company's appeal of the fine.
Mogrovejo added that one of the central arguments of Doe Run Peru's appeal was that Osingermin, in fining Doe Run Peru, sought to apply certain standards before they actually took effect.
Progress on projects:
On September 30, Doe Run Peru inaugurated a sulfuric acid plant for the lead circuit. The $50 million plant is expected to reduce by half sulfur dioxide emissions from the La Oroya metals smelter.
The expected achievement comes in addition to other significant progress seen since Doe Run Peru purchased the La Oroya facility from the Peruvian government in 1997. The progress has been acknowledged by independent bodies in Peru as well as the U.S. Blacksmith Institute, which sent a team to visit La Oroya last May. Following the visit Blacksmith said in a report that the company's programs were on pace to resolve the area's environmental issues in the near future. Environmental improvements:
From 1997 to now Doe Run Peru has made improvements on each of its environmental indicators. For example:
| | - An 88 percent reduction in the volume of effluents going into the Mantaro River
- Virtual elimination (99.9 percent) of the lead in those effluents
- A 77 percent reduction in air lead levels in La Oroya
- A 70 percent reduction in dust emissions from the main stack
