Locked out with no way to go
Nowadays, with the massive advances in car security, lose the keys and the car will do a very impressive job at keeping its doors firmly locked, leaving owners peering vainly through its windows from the outside.
Car manufacturers have, over the last decade, produced increasingly more sophisticated locking systems. Which is a good thing, as it keeps car thieves at bay and car insurance claims low.
Definitely not the key to economical motoring
But if drivers mislay their keys, according to Saga Car Insurance, and all the techo-gadgetry that goes with them, they will have a rather expensive predicament on their hands, if they haven't got their electronic counterpart. To remake and re-programme a new set of car keys can cost anything between £200 and £400. That's a lot of money for a couple of keys.
Keep a spare and keep on the road
With that in mind, it pays then, to make sure drivers have a spare set tucked away where they can easily and quickly be retrieved. So make sure they aren't kept them in the car's glove box - obvious it would seem, but it's surprising how many people do!
Some car insurance companies actually provide cover should drivers find themselves on the outside looking in, with no way whatsoever of getting in. The only problem here is that if motorists don't have their No Claim Discount protected, lost keys could mean lost years of incident-free motoring too.
