Information security certifications are increasingly valuable for IT personnel and the organizations that employ them because of the current economic climate, growing industry recognition, and recent DoD directives.

Information security certifications are increasingly valuable for IT personnel and the organizations that employ them because of the current economic climate, growing industry recognition, and recent DoD directives.
The top three certifications are:

The CISSP is the oldest and arguably best known security certification. The CISSP is an advanced certification that requires industry experience and covers a wide breadth of information.
| | - The SANS Institute Security Essentials Certification (GSEC)

The GSEC is an increasingly popular security certification that emphasizes skills immediately useful in the workplace, including hands on skills. The GSEC is comparable in difficulty to the CISSP.
Security+ is a well known and extremely popular entry-level certification.
The top three information security certifications were chosen based on the following parameters:
Well known - A certification needed to be well known to be considered. That left out newer security certifications, as security certifications that have been around longer tend to be naturally better known.
Popular - The popularity of the various security certifications was also considered. This also favored the older and more established security certifications.
General Purpose - Only general purpose, vendor neutral security certifications were considered. This automatically removed many security certifications from consideration, such as the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) and Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) certifications.
