Silverock Films Options Soho Crime's Chinatown Beat by Henry Chang
New York Production Company, Silverock Films, sees the future in Chinatown Trilogy by author Henry Chang. Silverock Films has optioned the novel Chinatown Beat, a story that follows the fictional career of Chinatown native son, NYPD Detective Jack Yu.
(PRWEB) April 15, 2009 -- Silverock Films has optioned the noir novel Chinatown Beat by Henry Chang, the first in Chang's Chinatown Trilogy. The series follows the career of Chinatown native and NYPD Detective, Jack Yu. In Chinatown Beat, Jack tracks the path of a serial rapist who targets young Chinese girls and pursues the murderer of a powerful Tong leader. The story is rich in the sights, sounds, and smells of a gritty and dark New York City Chinatown that will form the backdrop to the film noir version, now in development.
Chinatown Beat introduces Mona, the beautiful and mysterious Hong Kong woman and mistress of Uncle Four, "advisor for life", to the Hip Ching; Lucky, the violent and ambitious senior brother in the Ghost Legion, once Jack's friend; the feisty Chinese American immigration lawyer Alexandra Lee-Chow; and Ah Por, the ancient fortuneteller who knows the past and sees the future. In addition, many of Chinatown Beat's characters and locations return in the newest in the Chinatown Trilogy, Year of the Dog, published in November.
Silverock founder, Jacqueline McCaffrey, points to the striking authenticity of Detective Jack Yu's Chinatown as one reason she was attracted to Chinatown Beat, Silverock's first major project.
"The narrative takes place in the 1990's, but the violent Chinatown of the 1970's and its consequences resonate in the lives of the characters," says McCaffrey. "Silverock Films is about New York City, its voices, and its blocks. Jack's Chinatown is quintessentially New York and I am humbled that Henry Chang trusted Silverock to bring the world of Chinatown Beat to the screen."
Chang is pleased with the option announcement as well.
"I'm absolutely thrilled about the option and for Chinatown Beat to be developed for the movies," says Chang. "I'm confident that Silverock will be true to the story and the rendering of the characters. Seeing the characters and situations come alive on the big screen would be a dream realized."
Actor/producer Di Quon (Maid in Manhattan; My Life Disoriented) has signed on to spearhead development on the West Coast. Ms. Quon, a well-known member of the Asian American film community and an activist for greater diversity in film and television noted that Chinatown Beat will introduce flesh and blood characters that turn many stereotypes about Chinese Americans on their head. The lead character, Detective Jack Yu, is not easily categorized. He is a tough New York City cop not into kung fu. Growing up, he saw his best friend murdered by a Chinatown street gang. When the audience meets him, he is the only Asian American detective in the Fifth Precinct, located in the heart of Chinatown. He is a real person facing the complex issues of being an ethnic minority while being American at the same time.
