Ecommerce Website Design Helps Small Businesses Achieve Big Sales

(Vocus/PRWEB ) May 30, 2009 -- Small businesses have a big advantage in an economy like this: they can quickly retool to take advantage of new opportunities. Blue Fountain Media (www.bluefountainmedia.com) has found that many small businesses are turning to an outside provider for their ecommerce website design needs.

Good ecommerce web design does three things: first, it creates a site search engines can see and understand. Second, it creates a site that users will want to visit. And third, it quickly converts users into customers.

How does this happen? Ecommerce website design starts with site architecture: a website designed to showcase products should generally have a page for each product, plus category pages and a front page that highlights new products and great bargains. A search function is also useful, although more and more ecommerce website designs focus on getting search results from Google, rather than from the site itself.

Another key element of ecommerce website design is navigation: no matter where users are, they need to be able to find their way to a category page, the homepage, and a checkout page. For ecommerce websites, the design of each individual page should be designed to inform visitors as much as possible (and, of course, to sell them on the product). The design elements that link different pages together can be used to help people either make a purchasing decision, or shop for other products.

Of course, all this sounds like a lot of extra work. Does adding one new product mean adding product descriptions, and linking dozens of pages within the site to the new product? Of course not. One key element of ecommerce web design is a content management system that makes it all easy to manage. Creating a new product page should automatically create all the links necessary to make that page accessible to users, and with most modern content management systems, it does.

Modern ecommerce website design doesn't just mean building a good site for the visitors who are already there. It also means designing a site that Google can easily find. Google is good, and it's always getting better, but there are still lots of ways to tweak a site so it ranks well. From using effective keywords, to highlighting them in the title of the page and in section headers, to instructing search engines to ignore certain pages, and ensuring that there aren't duplicated pages.

Another key element of ecommerce website design is to aim for social media integration. That doesn't mean turning a site over to users -- it means making it easy for people to share pages they like, or delivering feedback. User feedback is one of the most valuable tools for creating a great site, but it's often ignored by site owners. Blue Fountain Media builds sites that get great feedback, but offers CMS solutions that let the site adapt to new user preferences.
