The New York Times to Provide Its Millions of Readers Unparalleled
Coverage and Behind-The-Scenes Access to Its Newsroom as It Covers the
Nov. 4 Elections
NEW YORK (Business Wire EON/PRWEB ) November 3, 2008 --
The
New York Times announced today special online election features for
the Nov. 4 races that will give readers live and on-demand access to
election results and The Times’s high-quality political
reporting, as well as an unprecedented look inside The Times
newsroom. Features will include a variety of interactive graphics,
continuous video updates from The Times’s
political correspondents and extensive mobile coverage with customized
text message alerts.
Expanding on the in-depth coverage of the primaries, NYTimes.com will
offer something new: a
pop-up dashboard with an up-to-the-minute tally of electoral votes,
breaking updates and state-by-state results, as they are called by The
New York Times and other major news organizations. The election
dashboard opens in a new browser window, giving readers the option
to explore all of The
Times’s complete online coverage and other
Web pages while continuing to receive and view live results through the
dashboard. The dashboard will be accessible from the NYTimes.com
homepage. AREVA, provider of solutions for producing CO2-free
energy and transmitting and distributing electricity, is sponsoring the election
dashboard.
Beginning at 7 p.m. and continuing every 30 minutes throughout the
night, political correspondents will deliver video
reports from the newsroom, giving viewers a look inside the newsroom
on an election night for the first time. These videos will be
prominently displayed on the NYTimes.com
homepage.
Readers will have constant access to results on The
Times mobile site (http://www.mobile.nytimes.com),
which will feature:
-
Live results of the presidential, Congressional and gubernatorial
races;
-
The electoral map as it changes throughout the evening;
-
County-level maps of each state with live results;
-
Links to The
Caucus blog and late-breaking headlines and articles;
-
Breaking news alerts when key states and races are decided;
-
Text message alerts that can be customized by zip code, delivering
periodic updates on the presidential, Senate and House races
corresponding to state and region;
-
Shortcuts for BlackBerry® devices to take
users directly to The Times’s politics
section from their home screen. To sign up, go to: http://mobile.nytimes.com/bbpolitics.
“We will be covering this historic event with
an array of online and mobile tools that will provide our readers with a
combination of up-to-the-minute results, detailed county-by-county
analysis, and the reporting and insight of the best political reporters
in the nation,” said Jim Roberts, associate
managing editor, The New York Times. “This has
been the first presidential election cycle in which we have fully
integrated The Times's political coverage across print, the Web and our
mobile platform, and the fruits of that collaboration will be on full
display Tuesday night.”

The Times will also run two special supplements in the newspaper on Nov.
5 and 6 detailing the results of the presidential, Congressional and
gubernatorial races. For those who own an Amazon
Kindle, subscriptions to The Times on Kindle devices are free from
Nov. 3 through 6.
The Times formed the Interactive News Technologies group in 2007, and in
the past year, this small team of journalists and software developers
has made great strides in rapidly building dynamic, data-driven
applications – such as interactive
election maps, the
Ad Wars feature and the detailed reports of Hillary
Clinton’s schedule as First Lady –
to enhance reporting online.
According to Nielsen Online, NYTimes.com had 20.1 million unique
visitors in the United States in September 2008, and was the No. 1
newspaper Web site in the United States, a position it has long held.
