(PRWEB) March 18, 2009 -- Jones and Bartlett Publishers, a global leader in educational publishing in critical fields such as Medicine, Nursing, Health Administration, and Public Health, has announced the release of Epidemiology 101, an entry-level college textbook offering a wide-ranging introduction to the basic science of public health for undergraduates and upper-level high school students. "Epidemiology 101" is designed to fulfill the Recommendations for Undergraduate Public Health Education recently published by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) and the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR) as part of the Educated Citizen and Public Health initiative.

"Increasingly, epidemiology is viewed as a component of liberal arts education. 'Epidemiology 101' is designed to satisfy the need for an undergraduate general education course in public health studies," says its author, Dr. Robert H. Friis. "This textbook is aimed at those who have had no prior training in health or statistics and who are not currently in the health field." Dr. Friis is professor and chair of the Department of Health Science at California State University, Long Beach. He received his doctoral degree from Columbia University and has completed a postdoctoral fellowship in social epidemiology at the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research. He is a member of the Society for Epidemiologic Research and the epidemiology section of the American Public Health Association.

According to the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine, "…all undergraduates should have access to education in public health." Until now, however, there has been no suitable text designed for a general education course in epidemiology. In a clear, cohesive writing style, "Epidemiology 101" covers the basics of the public health field: infectious disease epidemiology, environmental epidemiology, molecular epidemiology, and psychosocial/behavioral epidemiology. This ground-breaking college textbook on public health offers current, tangible examples from the field such as recent disease outbreaks, bioterrorism, and uses of epidemiology for policy development. End-of-chapter exercises provide access to a laboratory component for college science courses that require a laboratory. A companion website includes a comprehensive package of instructor resources and interactive student resources.

"Epidemiology 101" is the newest addition to Jones and Bartlett's Essential Public Health series, designed to provide students with a clear, comprehensive, user-friendly introduction to a full range of public health issues.

Epidemiology 101 may be ordered through the Jones and Bartlett Publishers website at www.jbpub.com or by phone at 800-832-0034. Qualified instructors are invited to request a complimentary review copy.
