Champion Top Junior Achiever
Darryl Wu, Winning Mathlete ®
Earns Popular Vote By Viewers in Sixth Annual
Relly Award Competition
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Business Wire EON/PRWEB ) September 26, 2008 --
Darryl Wu, the winner of the 2008 MATHCOUNTS National
Competition (www.mathcounts.org),
was declared this year’s winner of the Relly
Award for Best Junior Achiever on September, 26, 2008 on “Live
with Regis and Kelly.” This marks the second
year in a row that a Mathlete® has won the
popular vote for Jr. Achiever.
The Rellys recognize the best on-air moments of the past year on “Live,”
with the winners decided by “Live’s”
at-home viewing audience, who cast their votes online. Eleven-year-old
Darryl is the youngest Mathlete to win the national math bee in its
26-year-history. He and his classmates were surprised at his school in
Seattle, Washington, on September 17th when the “Regis
and Kelly” crew arrived unannounced to
present him with his award. Currently in its sixth year the Relly Awards
have become among the most popular events on the show.
"It was very exciting to win the MATHCOUNTS National Competition this
year and appear on ‘Live with Regis and Kelly’,"
said Darryl Wu. "Receiving the Relly at school was a surprise. Since I
am only in seventh grade I want to keep competing and look forward to
the opportunity of coming back to the show and hopefully winning this
honor again. I would like to thank all of the math-aware people who
voted for me and also the MATHCOUNTS organization for providing such an
enjoyable experience."
The MATHCOUNTS winner was also received by the President of the
United States in a ceremony at the White House in July after the
national competition, along with the top students and coaches who
compete in the program. Now in its 26th year, MATHCOUNTS
is America’s only non-profit
nationwide coaching and competition program that motivates and rewards
middle school students for math achievement.
“We’re delighted
that for the second year in a row the viewers of ‘Live
with Regis and Kelly’ rewarded a Mathlete
with their votes for special achievement,”
said Lou DiGioia, Executive Director of the MATHCOUNTS
Foundation. “Darryl’s
appearance on the show, and the vote of confidence from so many viewers,
helps raise awareness that math can be as fun and as challenging as any
school sport. We hope Darryl serves as a role model for kids everywhere,
and encourages every middle school to start a math club to promote
interest and excellence in mathematics. More people are recognizing that
math is essential in securing our country’s
future, and we’re grateful to ‘Live
with Regis and Kelly’ for highlighting the
efforts of the MATHCOUNTS Foundation along with Daryl’s
accomplishments.”
