The Shaw Festival Ontario Theatre Previews Eugene O'Neill's A Moon for the Misbegotten
A Moon for the Misbegotten opens at the Shaw Festival Court House Theatre Saturday, May 23rd
Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario (PRWEB) May 15, 2009 -- Renowned Ontario theatre Shaw Festival began preview performances of Eugene O'Neill's bittersweet love story A Moon for the Misbegotten on Tuesday, April 28 2009 in the Court House Theatre and the play will open Saturday, May 23rd.
Eugene O'Neill's final masterpiece of two misbegotten people who find each other under a full moon on a fateful night is considered one of the "great plays of the 20th century". A Moon for the Misbegotten is thought to be O'Neill's sequel to A Long Day's Journey into Night and the character of Jim Tyrone is considered by most to be the older version of Jamie Tyrone from Long Day's Journey into Night.
Set in 1923 in a Connecticut farmhouse, A Moon for the Misbegotten centres on three characters: Josie Hogan (Jenny Young), her father Phil Hogan (Jim Mezon), and their landlord James Tyrone Jr. (David Jansen). Phil is an Irish immigrant and his small farm is his livelihood. While all of Phil's sons have left him, Josie remains behind tending the land with her father and together they try to survive. A joke perpetrated by Tyrone, but taken as truth by Phil, sets into motion a scheme that takes advantage of the mutual affection between Josie and Tyrone, but ends up revealing deep moving insights about each of their lives.
Directed by Joseph Ziegler, A Moon for the Misbegotten also features Billy Lake and Patrick McManus. Designed by Christina Poddubiuk, the production features lighting design by Louise Guinand and fight direction by John Stead. The stage management team includes Stage Manager Diane Konkin, Production Stage Manager Judy Farthing and Assistant Stage Manager Eamonn Reil.
This production will mark the second time a play by Eugene O'Neill has been produced at Shaw Festival. The first, Ah! Wilderness in 2004 was also directed by Joseph Ziegler, who last season directed Bernard Shaw's widely acclaimed Getting Married.
A Moon for the Misbegotten opens Saturday, May 23 and plays in repertory until Friday, October 9. A Moon for the Misbegotten is sponsored by Scotiabank Group. For visitors to Niagara-on-the-Lake, many Niagara-on-the-Lake vacation packages are available for trips planned in conjunction with Shaw Festival plays.
