Lawyer Finds His Passion In Voice Acting

John Jay College Curriculum Video

Burlington, VT - Early this week voice-over artist and on screen talent, Rob Sciglimpaglia, was announced as the defense attorney for John Jay College's new batch of curriculum videos. Rob played the role of Mr. Burr through the mock trials that are geared toward helping the college demonstrate courtroom situations inside the classroom. The courtroom scene was set up in the North Building on the John Jay College campus.

"It was an easy shoot," said Rob, "We used a mock courtroom… it wasn't the way you would think. We did the opening and closing statements totally out of order." Being a lawyer for over 15 years before jumping into voice-overs and onscreen acting, Rob really had a great base of knowledge for the role.

"As an attorney for many years, sure I had a nice paying job, but at some point I realized that something was missing. My creative side just wasn't being nurtured. People had told me that I have a good voice, but I never looked at voice-overs as a potential income stream. It sounded more like a hobby to me…so I continued with my stressful day job until finally, in 2005, I took an introductory class called, 'You're on the Air: How to Really Make it in voice-overs' with Dan Levine. The class literally changed my life in such a positive manner that even I can't believe what I have accomplished and experienced. I took the class, because I thought it would be a fun time and perhaps a fun hobby to pursue. Little did I know that not only were there real opportunities to make money in this field, but the potential to earn way more than I was making as an attorney was very real, and the best part for me was that the potential to make money could be done on my own terms: as a self-employed individual with control over my own schedule versus as an employee at the beck and call of a supervisor. When I walked out of that class, I found my passion, and nothing was going to stop me from pursuing voice-overs."

After studying voice-over technique and producing a demo through a voice-over training & demo production outfit called Such A Voice, he has gone on to secure work on PBS, the History Channel, The Discovery Channel, A&E, the LA Dodgers. His voice has appeared on commercials for best selling author Dean Koontz, not to mention crossover-acting stints in blockbusters like Disney's "Enchanted". Now, four years later, Rob is a self-employed voice-over artist, actor, voice-over coach & producer (with Such A Voice), and part-time attorney who answers to nobody but himself!

Rob's new video with John Jay College is scheduled to finish production in the spring and start helping students of the mysterious courtroom find their way.
